BRIEF DISCRIPTION
Planning is an activity concerned with making choice about future options, taking into account probabilities and the value of what may be achieved and then seeking the implementation of the chosen options. City and Regional Planning can be defined as the art and science of ordering and managing land uses based on detailed understanding and analysis of social needs, goods and objectives within the socio-economic and physical environmental frameworks. It is concerned with the formulation, design implementation, management and monitoring of land use plans and policies at the local, urban and regional levels. It is a broad based discipline requiring a multidisciplinary approach and knowledge. It therefore requires comprehensive education and training in plan design and management of the total environment both from the theoretical and practical perspectives
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE
The programme is designed to produce professionals who are able:
To comprehended the complex nature of the problems and prospects of contemporary Nigerians towns and cities through the competent teaching of a wide range of courses;
To offer design solution to the existing settlement problems and to their projected future requirement through the teaching of design skills aimed at articulating the plan making and plan implementation processes.
To ensure proper implementation of planning solution by being able to:
- Draw up implementable plans
- Effectively present such plans to client groups
- Monitor and review performance of plan in the field.
To address vital issues in planning and development with the ultimate aim of reducing the existing urban and rural dichotomy.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
UME CANDIDATES
Admission shall normally be by entrance examination organized by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB). To be eligible for admission candidates must have at least (5) five credit in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or the West African School Certificate (WASC) its equivalent in
English language
Mathematics
Geography
And two from Physics, Biology, Economics, Fine Art or Technical Drawing
UME subjects should include
English Language
Mathematics
Economics and any one from Geography, Chemistry
"A" Level Candidates
Candidates for direct entry to 200 level should beholders of General Certificate of Education at the Advanced level (A/L) with passes in Mathematics, Geography and one subject from the following group. Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Technical Drawing or Fine Art.
SPECIAL ADMISSION
ND Candidates
Holders of National Diploma (ND) either in Town Planning or related discipline (Architecture, Estate Management etc) in Environmental Sciences must satisfy the initial requirement stated above and in addition obtain at least 60% (Upper Credit) in the appropriate ND programme. Candidates would be admitted to the 200 level but will be required to take some specified courses in year 1 to make up for any deficiencies.
